Launching Teamviewer remotely through SSH

Teamviewer is a wonderful tool to access your computer (or any other device) remotely if you need to use your a graphical screen. Probably is not as secure as other linux solutions (as VNC or a VPN) but the main advantage is that is very easy to install and configure.

Remote access to my home computer with Teamviewer

Suppose that we are on holidays far from home and we need to accomplish a task on our home computer using the graphical desktop. We have in our hands another device (for example a nexus7 tablet) and we are connected to WiFi hotspot. There is Teamviewer Apps for Android and IOS. We need Teamviewer installed in both machines: Desktop at home and our tablet, So I’m going to explain how can you launch remotely Teamviewer in your remote computer at home just for the time you need it to perform a particular task. As soon as we finished our job, we will stop it again to be safer.

I assume that you’ve already installed Teamviewer in your linux box and you also have a ssh account to login into your remote linux machine at home (user@home_machine:~$).

Actualizar Java en Debian Squeeze

Algunas Administraciones públicas (Como por ejemplo la Agencia Tributaria) requieren que el navegador soporte la última versión de Java por motivos de seguridad. Las versiones de Java se actualizan con cierta frecuencia así que conviene tener un método sencillo y rápido de actualizar para nos haga falta.

¿Qué versión de Java usa nuestro navegador?

Workshop for beginners: Programming with Android

I finished my first workshop about programming with Android held at ObraSocial NCG en Vigo. The Woorkshop was led by Carlos Olmedo and it lasted 12 hours. We learn to work with Eclipse and the basics of Android language.

This was my second attempt to understand Android (I did a try by myself in a MOOC course some months ago) and I realized that I will need more work to be able to something valuable. My lack of knowledge about Java is a wall to learn programming in Android.

Embedding presentations from Google Drive into Mahara ePortfolio

I’ve recently discovered that Mahara ePortfolio v 1.6.3 didn’t display by default Google Drive Presentations embedded in pages. I had tested the Mahara external content plugin for Google Apps, and it worked flawlessly when I embedded Google Maps and Docs.

The exception came out when we tried to do the same ritual for embedding Google Drive Presentations. We followed the same procedure (make the presentation public, copy and paste the iframe code,..) but nothing appeared when it should be. After reviewing the configuration of the plugin administration looking for an unselect pluging and doing several attemps I started to think that it was a bug in version 1.6.3.

Finally, seeking in Mahara Manual Online I found out that we need to manually setup an entry to allow iframe tags from Google Drive. As soon I did it it worked as expected.

So these are the steps you must do to overcome this issue in your Mahara 1.6:

Taller Moodle2 Avanzado

Durante los días 4, 9, 11, 16 y 18 de abril 2013 impartí el Centro Social de NovaCaixaGalicia de Vigo un Taller de Moodle2 Avanzado con una duración de 10 horas. A este taller, que se impartió con el Servidor Moodle del Proyecto ESCOLAS,  asistieron la mayoría de los asistentes a Taller de Moodle Básico celebrado anteriormente.

El Programa del Curso/Taller fué:

  • Breve repaso del uso de Recursos y de las Actividades (Foros, tareas y glosarios) vistos ambos en el curso de iniciación
  • El Banco de preguntas de Moodle: Tipos de preguntas (core questions and non-core questions). Gestión del banco de preguntas. Uso eficiente de los distintos tipos de preguntas. Ventajas e inconvenientes de cada tipo de pregunta. Trucos.
  • El Libro de calificaciones: Cómo funciona y cómo gestionarlo.
  • Uso de nuevas Actividades:
    • Cuestionarios: Preparación y elaboración de un cuestionario
    • Lección: Elaboración de una lección
    • Módulo de Encuestas
    • Taller (Workshop) y
    • Base de datos.

¿y yo cómo hago para que en mi Colegio tengamos Moodle?

Pero entonces, Moodle es mucho más que un sitio donde ‘colgar’ material, es decir es mucho más que un repositorio, ¿como podríamos hacer para que los compañeros conozcan estas características de Moodle?

El grupo, trabajó intensamente para cumplir con el objetivo de ver todo lo inicialmente planificado. La verdad es que 10 horas se queda en poco pero lo más importante es que se llevan una visión clara de lo que pueden hacer con Moodle. La preguntas/comentarios recurrentes en las últimas sesiones eran:

  • ¿y yo cómo hago para que en mi Colegio tengamos Moodle?
  • Pero entonces, Moodle es mucho más que un sitio donde ‘colgar’ material, es decir es mucho más que un repositorio, ¿como podríamos hacer para que los compañeros conozcan estas características de Moodle?

La respuesta a ambas la tenemos en el Proyecto ESCOLAS.

Upgrading from Mahara 1.5.2 to 1.6.3

Today we upgrade our Mahara e-portfolio from v1..5.2 to 1.6.3. We have also changed the theme to ‘Primary School Theme‘ because some students told us it was more attractive and cool to them.

Our students at Colegio Apostol Santiago are logging to Mahara from Moodle through Mnet. Currently we are running three Moodle instances: one for Primary (2.4), and two for Secondary (1.9 and  an experimental one for Science teachers with 2.4). Mnet was set up in Primary Moodle instance to log as ‘Primary students’ institution in mahara and, from Moodle 1.9 for Secondary students as members of ‘Secondary Students’ institutions. All old plugins were re-installed again and no problems were detected. We will increase the quota for our students from 50MB to 100MB.
